Suspect caught in US black church ‘hate crime’ rampage

Police captured the white suspect Thursday in a gun massacre at one of the oldest black churches in the United States, the latest deadly assault to feed simmering racial tensions. Police detained 21-year-old Dylann Roof, shown wearing the flags of defunct white supremacist regimes in pictures taken from social media, after nine churchgoers were shot dead during a bible study on Wednesday. He was caught at a traffic stop in North Carolina and flown back just hours later to Charleston, South Carolina, the scene of the slaughter in the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

South Korea’s growing MERS outbreak has laid bare the country’s poor handling of disasters despite President Park Geun-Hye’s pledge to overhaul public safety measures following last year’s ferry disaster, experts say. “Bureaucratic inefficiency, disregard for a crisis manual and the lack of training and education to deal with a crisis all remain the same,” he told AFP.

Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt conceded defeat in Thursday’s general election after an anti-immigration party scored a record vote to become the second-largest party and lifted the opposition right-wing bloc to victory. The DPP became the largest right-wing party for the first time with 21.1 percent of the vote, giving the grouping 90 seats in parliament. “Now it is up to Lars Lokke Rasmussen to try to form a government,” she said, referring to the leader of the main right-wing party Venstre.

California-based Segue Construction paid $3.4 million to settle litigation over alleged defects in a condominium development in Millbrae, California, after a homeowners association sued, the homeowners’ lawyer said. The design and construction of outdoor spaces such as balconies were “a very prominent part of the litigation,” said San Francisco attorney Thomas Miller, who represented the homeowners.

Military jury in California sentences Marine convicted of Iraq murder to time served

A military jury at Camp Pendleton in California on Thursday sentenced a U.S. Marine convicted of the 2006 murder of a former Iraqi police officer to time he already served in confinement. The jury also gave Marine Sergeant Lawrence Hutchins III, who previously served about seven years in confinement, a bad-conduct discharge from the Marine Corps. The sentence came a day after the military jury at the Southern California base found Hutchins guilty of murder, conspiracy and larceny but acquitted him of a charge of making false statements.
